Veterans Day in Little Rock: the national cemetery, the free meals, and where to eat

Little Rock National Cemetery sits two miles from the state capitol, holds a third of its original burials under stones marked unknown, and is open dawn to dusk every day of the year including Veterans Day. Veterans Day 2026 is Wednesday, November 11. The restaurant chains have not published their 2026 free-meal offers yet. Here is what is confirmed, what counts as proof of service, and where to eat.

Veterans Day in Little Rock: the national cemetery, the free meals, and where to eat

Little Rock keeps its Veterans Day in two places, and both of them are open on the day. Two miles southeast of the state capitol, Little Rock National Cemetery is open from dawn to dusk every day of the year. Downtown in MacArthur Park, the state’s military history museum sits in the building General Douglas MacArthur was born in. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, November 11. The free meals are the least settled part of the day: every list you will find today is last year’s list. We checked.

1868The year the site was designated a national cemetery, to gather up the Union dead buried across Arkansas. It is a little over 31 acres now and on the National Register.
2,333Of the 5,425 people already buried there when it was designated, that many were unknown. Another 1,482 were moved in from battlefield graves that same year.

The national cemetery, and the fence that came down in 1938

It is at 2523 Springer Boulevard, about two miles southeast of the capitol, and it is open to visitors from dawn to dusk every day of the year. There is no office on site; it is run out of Fort Smith National Cemetery, on 479-783-5345, weekdays eight until half past four. The cemetery is closed to new burials except for family joining an existing gravesite.

The ground was a Union encampment early in the Civil War, outside the city limits as they then stood. In 1866 the government bought 9.1 acres of the new city cemetery for military burials, added 3.2 more in April 1868, and designated the whole thing a national cemetery on the ninth of that month. The stated job was to gather the Union dead who had been buried all over Arkansas into one place. By then 5,425 people were already there, and 2,333 of them were unknown. That same year another 1,482 sets of remains were brought in from battlefield graves.

The part worth standing still for is what happened next door. In 1884 an eleven acre Confederate cemetery was laid out alongside, and 640 Confederate soldiers were moved into it from Mount Holly Cemetery downtown. In 1913 Congress allowed the War Department to take the deed from the City of Little Rock, but only on the condition that nobody except Confederate veterans could be buried there. That restriction stood for twenty five years. It was lifted in 1938, and the Confederate cemetery simply became the Confederate Section of Little Rock National Cemetery. Union and Confederate dead, one fence, one register.

Two monuments there are on the National Register in their own right: the marble Confederate Monument of 1884, and the granite and bronze Minnesota Monument of 1916, put up for 162 Minnesota soldiers who died in Arkansas. It is one of only seven Minnesota monuments standing in national cemeteries anywhere in the country.

MacArthur Park, and the building a general was born in

The other place to spend an hour is the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History at 503 East 9th Street, in MacArthur Park downtown. It occupies the old Arsenal Building, one of the oldest surviving structures in Little Rock, which saw the Civil War arrive at its door and which is also, straightforwardly, where Douglas MacArthur was born in 1880. Arkansas’s military history is laid out inside it.

The museum has not posted its 2026 Veterans Day programme yet, which is normal for September. If you want the outdoor version, the State Capitol grounds carry the Arkansas Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Arkansas Medal of Honor Memorial and the Gold Star Families Memorial, all within a short walk of each other and all open whenever the grounds are.

Free meals: what is actually confirmed for 2026

Same problem, different subject. Search for Veterans Day free meals right now and you will find long lists with 2026 in the headline. Open the restaurants’ own pages and the offers are from 2025. Applebee’s Veterans Day page, as this was written in mid-September, still says the free entree is available on Tuesday, November 11, which was last year’s date.

So we are not going to publish a list of offers that no restaurant has agreed to. What we can tell you is the pattern, because it is remarkably stable. The chains that run a free Veterans Day meal have run it for years, most announce in the last week of October, and the terms rarely move: dine-in only, one meal per veteran, a limited menu to choose from, drinks and tip not included, and participating locations only, which matters if you are driving in from Conway or Benton. Applebee’s has run its offer for eighteen consecutive years. Golden Corral, Texas Roadhouse, Chili’s, Denny’s, Red Robin, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans and Buffalo Wild Wings have all been regular participants.

We are checking the chains’ own pages weekly and will list each 2026 offer here as the restaurant confirms it, with the date we confirmed it. Nothing goes on this page from an aggregator.

What counts as proof of service

This is the question that actually causes trouble at the door, and the answer is broader than most people expect. Applebee’s published terms accept a Uniformed Services ID card, a Uniformed Services retired ID card, a current Leave and Earnings Statement, a veterans organization card such as American Legion or VFW, a DD214, a citation or commendation, and, simply, a photograph of yourself in uniform. Most chains use a similar list. If you served and you do not carry a card, a DD214 or a photo is usually enough. Call the specific location first, because the offer is franchise-level and the person answering the phone is the one who will be working the door.

Gifts for the veteran in your family

The veteran in your house is reading the top half of this page. If you are the one buying for him or her, this is the half that matters. These are the things that actually get worn and kept: the branch cap, the case for the flag that came off the casket, the box the medals finally come out of the drawer for. Twelve picks, all five branches, every one of them rated by people who bought it.

Where to eat after

Springer Boulevard and MacArthur Park are a few minutes apart, and everything below sits between them or just off to one side. These are ranked by Insider Score, and all four are open at lunchtime on a Wednesday. Two higher scores are missing on purpose: Star of India and The Pantry both score 7.3, the best on any of our Little Rock lists, and both are eight miles west in the suburbs.
